DEFINITIONS

Biotin is a B vitamin necessary for metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
Biotin is found in many foods and sources that contain a lot of biotin are liver, kidney, pancreas, eggs, milk, fish and nuts.

CAUSE

This vitamin deficiency is not likely to occur in people who balanced food intake. But eating raw eggs for several weeks can cause biotin deficiency because raw eggs contain a substance that binds biotin in the body so as to prevent absorption.

This vitamin deficiency can occur in people who received the intravenous feeding (IV) in a long time without any extra biotin.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms include:
- Sleepy
- Weight loss
- Dermatitis
- Anxiety attacks
- Muscle aches
- Certain neurological symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia (difficulty sleeping) and hallucinations.

Diagnosis

Laboratory examination showed a decrease in biotin levels in the blood and urine.
